Random Acts of Awesome
Flash mobs, "a group of people who create an unexpected and temporary public performance", have become wildly popular over the past few years. Bill Wasik, senior editor for Harper’s Magazine organized the world’s first flash mob in May of 2003 as a social experiment to poke fun at hipsters, exposing their dedication to non-conformity as in fact status quo. Today, flash mobs are used for performance art, marketing, and community building.
From an operatic troupe to a choreographed dance routine, or an improv skit to a “freeze”, The Flash Mob can organize and produce any flash mob you can imagine (we’ll help of course). Make your event one of a kind by booking The Flash Mob today!

Our History

Vancouver International Children's Festival
When I was an MBA student, I watched an operatic flash mob that took place in Valencia, Spain on November 13, 2009. Six classically trained singers seemingly step out of their day-to-day lives and suddenly begin singing a couple of operatic favourites from Verdi’s Opera La Traviata. Dressed as vendors, parents, or general passers-by, each singer came forward from the crowd one at a time, adding their voice to the excitement and splendour of the impromptu audience. By the time the second song had ended the crowd was whipped into a frenzy; laughing, dancing and singing along.
After watching this video, I had questions about the response of the crowd, the depth of their emotional response and what kind of impact the event had on their shopping experience that afternoon. It was at this point I realized flash mobs would be the idea for my thesis.

Along with several friends, I produced my first flash mob with the goal of measuring the impact of the flash mob on consumer behaviour (my findings have implications for business owners, market administrators, educators and performers alike, but we can talk about that another time).
Like most people, I had originally thought that flash mobs were reserved for the public forum but the Granville Island Market flash mob taught us that there is a corporate application as well. This has been further evidenced by the flood of requests we've received to produce flash mobs in different corporate environments (see Applause). Each experience, coupled with the response from the audience, was so wonderful, so energizing, that we had to keep going. It's just too much fun not to.
